Out of the 109 men in Company I of the 8th Alabama Infantry 104 were Irish. The company was known as the Emerald Guard. They included the traditional Irish Harp and Shamrocks, with the words ERIN GO BRAGH (Ireland Forever) and FAUGH A BALLAGH (Clear the way)
