In February of 1862 General Earl Van Dorn adopted this unique flag for all units under his command. General Van Dorn, a distant relation of Andrew Jackson, would be killed in 1863 not in battle but by a jealous husband at his headquarters in Tennessee.
The flag was carried into battle most notably by the 4th Mississippi and 15th Arkansas Infantry Regiments. The flag is often identified with these two regiments, but was also carried by units of the Army of Mississippi and East Louisiana.
