8th AL Infantry Co I Flag
Out of the 109 men in Company I of the 8th Alabama Infantry 104 were Irish. The company was known as the Emerald Guard. They included the traditional Irish Harp and Shamrocks, with the words ERIN GO BRAGH! (Ireland Forever) and FAUGH A BALLAGH! (Clear the way)

The original flag no longer exists, reports are that it was torn to pieces and handed to the men as souvenirs when they surrendered at Appomattox rather than be turned over to federal soldiers. Our version of this historic flag is recreated from historical descriptions of the original, with slogans above and below a harp surrounded by a wreath of shamrocks. The harp seen here was used by Irish patriots from the 1700's and can be seen on other Civil War era flags as well as the popular Erin Go Bragh flag used by the St. Patrick's Brigade during the Mexican-American War.
