The salute, I salute the Confederate flag with affection, reverance and undying devotion to the cause for which it stands, is used by many southern heritage groups and has been for over 60 years. The original date and author have been lost to time, but the sentiment still remains.
The cause for which the vast majority of Confederates fought was not slavery, Lincolns weaponized emancipation wouldn't come until years into the war, but to repel the invading northern armies in the attempt to save their homes and protect their families. As in most wars, the soldiers didn't start the war but were forced to fight it.
