The Ladies' Soldiers' Friend Society of Nashville sewed the original Sons of Erin flag for the 10th Tennessee Regiment, which was formed in April of 1861 and largely made up of Irishmen. In February of 1862 the regiments flag was left at Fort Henry during the Confederate retreat to nearby Fort Donelson and captured by Federal Forces. At Fort Donelson the regiment was captured, the enlisted men sent to the prison at Camp Douglas, IL and the officers sent to Fort Warren in Boston until September of 1862 when they were traded for Union officers.
