This popular design traces it's origins back to 1775 when the rattle snake and motto were used by patriots in Philadelphia, Rhode Island and other places before becoming the flag of the Continental Marines.
The rattlesnake itself was used even earlier by men such as Ben Franklin and Paul Revere to symbolize the patriots readiness and willingness to strike and defend liberty. This classic design is often considered one of the first true flags of the United States.
