Grand Union Flag
Considered to be the first national flag of the United States of America, hoisted aboard the ship Alfred by Lt. John Paul Jones on December 3rd of 1775 and on New Years Day at Prospect Hill in Cambridge, Massachusetts (now Somerville) by Gen. George Washington. The later event is re-enacted each year at a memorial on the same hill.

The flag was easily created by sewing white stripes on a British Red Ensign flag. It was used until the Flag Act of 1776 adopted a similar flag which replaced the British Union in the canton with thirteen stars representing the thirteen colonies.
