The 88th Irish Brigade was one of several Irish Brigades raised in the Northeast during the Civil War from the Irish immigrant population. The 88th was mustered into service in 1861 at Fort Schuyler and was composed of men from NY and NJ. In two years of fighting the brigade went from over 800 men to around 50. In 1864 their recruiting campaign managed to get 400 new recruits and the brigade kept fighting until the war's end in 1865.
