After the state seceded from the Union in January of 1861 a flag was chosen, a blue field with a gold palmetto tree inside white oval and a crescent. This design only lasted two days, becoming known as the two-day flag before the white oval and gold palmetto were replaced by a simple white palmetto. The flag has been in use since then.
The design incorporated the crescent Moultrie Liberty design, in use by militia during the revolution, with the addition of the palmetto to symbolize the hardy wood used to build the fort at Sullivan's Island where the patriots held off the British for over 16 hours.
