Flag - 1st Cherokee Mounted Rifles - Cherokee Braves
Led by Brigadier General Stand Watie (Cherokee: Degataga), the Cherokee Braves flew a variant of the First Confederate Flag. The flag contained the words CHEROKEE BRAVES, and five additional stars to represent the five civilized tribes of the Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek, Seminole, and central star for the Cherokee.

Watie was a leader among the Cherokee and a signer of the Treaty of New Echota, which lead to the Cherokee moving west, uniting the east and west Cherokee. This move would later be called the "trail of tears" due to the hardships endured during such travel in the 1800s.

Watie was the Principal Chief of the Cherokee from 1862 through 1866. The Cherokee sided with the Confederacy partially due to their ownership of slaves, with 10% of Cherokee owning slaves, and out of fears the federal government had plans to create states such as Oklahoma out of what was then known as Indian Territory. Watie would fight Union forces alongside other Confederates, as well as against Cherokee, Creek, Seminole and others in Indian Territory who supported the Union.

Watie would sign a cease-fire on June 23rd, 1865, making him the last Confederate General to surrender.
