Flag - 1st Confederate \"Independence or Death\"
This flag is based on one captured during the war by Iowa troops stationed at Waverly, Tennessee. The report:

"On the 14th of January detachments from the battalions at Waverly and Section 49, under command of Lieutenant Colonel Barner, scoured the counties of Hickman and Perry south of Duck river, while a detachment from the battalion at Waverly under Major Brown scouted the country on the north side of that river. This expedition resulted in capturing a considerable number of prisoners, horses, and arms and driving many desperadoes out of the country. One flag bearing the inscription Independence or Death was brought in by Captain Dance Company K and afterwards sent to the Adjutant General of Iowa."

What remains of the flag is kept by the Iowa State Historical Museum.
