This political banner flag is based on one produced in the north around 1863, during the Civil War. The term copperhead was used to describe anti-war Democrats who were subversive and unpatriotic to the Union. During the first years of the Civil War it seemed as if the South may win, and Northerners grew tired of sending their men south to fight a war. Many assumed Lincoln would not be re-elected in 1864, but through the usual politics and questionable procedures he secured a second term.
