Confederate flag in LSU purple & gold colors.
According to the LSU website, "Purple represents the passion, spirit and culture of the LSU community and its roots in Louisiana, while gold stands for the excellence, produced by that passion and demonstrated at every level of academics and athletics. These colors are banners for LSU dating as far back as 1893, yet they still resonate today. "
The LSU Tigers were named after the Fighting Tigers, in reference to the "Tiger Rifles", a volunteer company made up of mainly Irishmen from New Orleans and which was eventually used to refer to all Louisiana soldiers fighting on the Confederate side during the Civil War.
