Flag - North Carolina State (1861 - 1865)
The first official flag of North Carolina was voted on during the state Constitutional convention of 1861, when the state voted to join the Confederacy. May 20th, 1775 was the supposed date of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence signed in Charlotte, NC, declaring independence from Britain by those in Mecklenburg County.

May 20th, 1861 was the date North Carolina seceded from the Union and joined the Confederacy. Speaking to a crowd in Charlotte, NC, in 1864 Confederate President Davis reminded the crowd that they were the first to defy British authority connecting the states decision to join to Confederacy with their earlier choice to declare themselves free from British rule.

The flag was used during the war and officially replaced in 1885 when a former Confederate soldier turned Adjutant General introduced a bill giving North Carolina it's flag still in use.
