New England Flag
While there was no official flag of New England, a flag containing a red field and with white canton containing a green pine tree is often cited as the de facto New England flag. It is notably depicted by John Trumbull in his painting The Death of General Warren at the Battle of Bunker's Hill, June 17, 1775. The Battle of Bunker Hill was actually fought on Breed's Hill. During the battle the British assaulted a redoubt thrown up by the colonists three times. The first two times the British were repulsed. The third time the British were successful in taking the hill mainly due to the colonists running out of munitions. Trumbull was at the Army camp in nearby Roxbury and watched the battle through field glasses.
