Flag - Commodore Perry - Dont Give Up The Ship
On June 1st, 1813 during a naval battle between the USS Chesapeake and the HMS Shannon Captain James Lawrence was fatally shot. His last words to his crew were Dont give up the ship! Unfortunately the crew were forced to give up the ship when it was overwhelmed by the British boarding party and taken to Nova Scotia where Lawrence was buried with military honors before being re-interred in New York City.

Fellow officer Commodore Oliver Perry had the words stitched onto a blue flag, which was flown aboard his ship, the USS Lawrence, in September of 1813 as it cut the British off from their supply lines. When the Lawrence sustained damage Perry was forced to move to the USS Niagara, and he took the flag with him to continue the fight.
