The 10th Tennessee Sons of Erin flag is probably one of the best known regimental flags of the civil war. The 10th was formed in Tennessee in 1861 consisting of mainly Irish. Their famous regimental banner shows a harp with the motto Sons of Erin - Go Where Glory Waits You.
This is the personal banner of Col. Randall W. McGavock, the former Mayor of Nashville and a 4th generation Irish-American who helped to organize and outfit the 10th. When Adolphus Heiman was given command of a brigade in 1862 McGavock became Colonel of the regiment. He was captured at Fort Donelson and sent to Fort Warren in Boston Harbor before being paroled later that year. The regiment was paroled and reorganized in 1862 with McGavock being re-elected as Lt. Col., becoming Colonel upon the death of Adolphus Heiman in November of 1862. McGavock was killed in action while leading a counter attack during the battle of Raymond, MS, in May of 1863.
Col. Randal W. McGavock's personal banner currently resides in the Tennessee State Museum along with the 10th's original regimental flag.
